As we know the Church’s Liturgical Cycle begins anew each year with the First Sunday of Advent and follows its course to the Last Sunday after Pentecost (1962 Missal) and the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe (1970 Missal). I would like to work within that structure to introduce a Pledge-Plan for the support of our parish church. Specifically I would like to ask each parish household to consider what you might be able to do for the parish financially between the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady on December 8th, 2017 (the titular Mystery of Faith for our parish) and the Anniversary of the Dedication of the parish church of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes, Thanksgiving Day (November 22nd), 2018.

This is the first time we are trying this approach so I ask your patience if it is slow-moving in its implementation. I will make my approach to registered parish households through a mailing which will contain a cover letter, a pledge card, and a blank parish registration form in order to provide the opportunity to update any information. The pledge card will ask you to commit to a stewardship level of giving in proportion to your means over the course of the Year of Grace 2018. Obviously, it is a freewill gift, given first and foremost to God in gratitude for all of His gifts to us.

This Pledge-Plan will also help fulfill the purpose of up-dating our parish rolls and of perhaps becoming aware of any circumstances which call for a greater attention from the Parish Priest and the Pastoral Staff to your household. We need to be precise in identifying what it means to be a “parishioner” at a parish. The term is being used ever more loosely in the present day.

I am looking at “the grid” in this way:

Full Parish Member: Registered in the parish, regularly attends Sunday Mass at the parish church, and makes more than a token contribution to the parish’s financial support.
Associate Member: On the parish rolls, makes more than a token financial contribution, but irregularly attends Sunday Mass here.
Special Category: Registered parishioners whose circumstances are such that they don’t fit one of the above categories, but they certainly are joined to the parish in will.
Contributing Non-Member: People not registered as parishioners, but who contribute to the support of the parish nonetheless.

People who may be registered but who have withdrawn from parish life and church support will be moved to the column of Inactive. (It is helpful if the parish office is informed when someone has transferred their membership to another parish.) People who are un-registered and are non-practicing Catholics, though they may live in the parish territory, they are lapsed from the Faith and are not entitled to the same considerations afforded to actual members of the parish. That can change by their own return to the practice of the Faith and their own sharing in the burden of supporting the mission of this parish by their donor dollars.

About Our Parish

Mary Immaculate of Lourdes is Newton and Needham Massachusetts's oldest Roman Catholic Parish. Founded as Saint Mary's Parish in 1870 it was renamed "Mary Immaculate of Lourdes" when the new Church was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, 1910. In addition to being a regular territorial parish of the Archdiocese of Boston it is also a "Mission Parish" since 2007 with a special apostolate for the Traditional Latin Mass (1962 Missal).
